VON BRITTON MUSIC ACADEMY

Music is not something we perform.  It is something we learn to create.

Private instruction in voice, piano, composition, theory, musical theater, and musicianship for students seeking depth, clarity, and artistic confidence.

Lessons are rooted in listening, movement, expression, and the lifelong joy of making music.

The Instrument That Contains the Orchestra

At the center of the academy is the piano.

With eighty-eight keys, the instrument holds an entire spectrum of sound. It can be understood much like a painter’s palette filled with colors waiting to be blended.

When students begin to understand how those colors relate through harmony, rhythm, listening, and touch, music begins to appear naturally.

Not as something forced.

But as something discovered.

About Darren Von Britton

Von Britton Music Academy was founded by musician, composer, pianist, and voice teacher Darren Von Britton.

Darren’s relationship with music began early. He started playing piano at four years old and gave his first public performance at seven, sparking a lifelong dedication to music. From singing a cappella in church to performing with the Crook County Cadet Boychoir and touring internationally with university ensembles, music quickly became both his discipline and his passion.

A classically trained bass-baritone, Darren has performed in more than a dozen countries and brings a wide musical perspective to his teaching. His background in Speech and Hearing Science, along with training as a licensed massage therapist, informs a unique approach that emphasizes coordination, healthy technique, and expressive musicianship.

At Von Britton Music Academy, Darren works with a limited number of students, offering individualized instruction designed to build skill, creativity, and confidence.

The Academy Approach

The goal of the academy is not simply to teach students how to play songs.

The goal is to help students become musicians.

Lessons focus on the foundations that allow music to make sense and feel natural.

Students learn to:

listen deeply

understand musical structure

develop healthy technique

recognize harmony and patterns

build vocal and instrumental confidence

express musical ideas clearly

When these elements begin to work together something important happens.

Music stops feeling like a task and begins to feel like a language.

Areas of Study

Students may focus on one discipline or combine several areas of study.

Piano

Technique, interpretation, coordination, improvisation, and repertoire drawn from classical and contemporary traditions.

Music Theory

Understanding how music works so that reading, improvisation, and composition become intuitive.

Voice

Breath support, tone development, diction, phrasing, and expressive singing.

Musical Theater

Song interpretation, storytelling, vocal style, and audition preparation.

Composition

Learning how melody, harmony, and structure allow students to create their own music.

Music Appreciation

Listening deeply to great works and understanding the artistic choices that shape them.

The Piano as Color

One idea shared frequently in the academy is that the piano can be understood like a painter’s palette.

Each of its eighty-eight keys represents a color.

Technique, harmony, and theory simply provide the tools to blend those colors.

When students begin to see these relationships clearly they stop feeling like they are trying to play music.

They begin to feel like they are making music.

Who the Academy Serves

Von Britton Music Academy welcomes students who are curious, thoughtful, and ready to grow.

  • children discovering music for the first time

  • teenagers developing artistic identity

  • adult beginners beginning a lifelong interest

  • returning musicians reconnecting with piano or voice

Age matters less than curiosity and commitment.

Private Instruction

Lessons are offered in three formats.

30 minutes

Ideal for young beginners

45 minutes

A balanced option for many students

60 minutes

Recommended for older students, voice work, and deeper study

Lessons may include piano, voice, theory, repertoire, composition, or a combination depending on the student’s goals.

The Studio Experience

The academy maintains a deliberately small studio.

This allows each student to receive thoughtful attention and supports a calm, focused learning environment.

Lessons are structured, encouraging, and artistically grounded.

Students develop technique, understanding, and confidence in a way that feels steady and sustainable.

Music thrives when discipline and joy work together.

Depending on the student and arrangement, lessons may take place in the student’s home, in Darren’s studio, online, or in a hybrid format.

Specific arrangements are discussed during the consultation process.
